Audio Lectures updated for the third edition of BBG

Now that the third edition of Basics of Biblical Greek; Third Edition is out, we have updated the audio lectures. The actual text of the two editions is sufficiently similar so that Bill only had to redo the lectures for Chapters 20, 35, and the new 36. A few of the references to section numbers in the second edition might not match the third, but other than that the basic content is the same. (Click here to see a list of the basic differences between editions.)

If you have already purchased the lectures for the second edition, don't worry about upgrading. We will put the three updated lectures on the online course for free. You're welcome ;-)

Bill is hard at work on the video lectures, and they should be available late second quarter. Remember, it is cheaper to buy the current lectures and upgrade to the video later than to buy the video when it is available. See a list of our current prices and upgrade costs.

When the videos are available, we will announce them on the home page.

Survey for Greek Mini-Grammar

Bill is working on a new Greek mini-grammar. It will be a couple hundred pages long, and small enough to easily carry with your Greek Testament. It is designed for people who have learned first year Greek (regardless of which first year book they used) and want an easy reference book as they fine-tune their Greek skills.
If you could fill out this survey, it would help me with a few remaining decisions I have to make.
Thanks. --Bill

New name

You may have noticed that the url for Teknia has changed to "www.learnbiblicalgreek.com." You can still use "teknia.com" to get here; it is all the same site. We changed the url to help Google find us. All your old bookmarks will still work.

FlashWorks tutorial/forum

We have added a short tutorial on how to get up and running with FlashWorks, and answered the two most common questions we receive.

  • How to run two databases (e.g., Greek and Hebrew)
  • How to create your own database

You can get to the the tutorial by clicking here. For more detailed information, check the online help information that comes with FlashWorks.

You can also ask questions, leave requested features and the like, at the forum.

FlashCards for Anki

Stephen Young has made the database of words from BBG available for Anki, a flashcard program that works on iphones, Macs, PCs and also allows for turning chapters on and off.

He says, "This is on top of it being great (possibly the best) vocab management
software and it's free (opensource)."

Thanks so much for your contribution to the community. Check it out at:

FlashCards for iPhone

Good news! Someone has made two sets of FlashCards for studying Greek vocabulary on iFlipr, a really good iPhone application. There are two sets going through chapter 21. Unfortunately, no iPhone app (as far as I know) gives us the ability to select words by chapter, but this is a great start.

I spoke with someone a while back about making these decks of cards, but I have misplaced their name. If you made the cards, can you drop me an email so I can say thank you properly. Hopefully, you will be able to finish the cards.

If you know of any other iPhone or BlackBerry program that uses my vocabulary, please let me know using the "Add new comment" link below. (You need to have an account and have logged in to do this.) Thanks.

All Things are Better in Koine

Announcements

You have got to see this YouTube presentation of the value of learning Greek, entitled "All Things are Better in Koine." Here are the Lyrics.

All Things Are Better in Koine Lyrics
Written by Derek North © 2008

Kids! Is your English translation getting you down?
Teens! Is your “Dude on the Street” bible leaving you with a frown?
Pastors! To what page can you flip when you need that exegetical trip?
Well, my friends I’m here to tell you that all things are better in….KOINE!
All things are better in Koine
It’s what the Scriptures really say
It saves the exegetical day
All things are better in Koine
En arche en ho logos, kai ho logos en pros ton theon, kai theos en ho logos
Now don’t that make me sound more holy? Yeah!!!
All things are better in Koine
It’s what the Scriptures really say
It saves the exegetical day
All things are better in Koine.

Remember everyone, theology is done in community
So why do you sing and repeat after me…..
(Lego my ego, lego my ego)
That cracks me up every time I hear it
(Lego my ego, lego my ego)
That joke kills me
(Lego my ego, lego my ego)
That never gets old!
(Lego my ego, lego my ego)
Oh man!

K (to the) O I N (to the) E
D.W. bringing the beat–Daniel Wallace
K (to the) O I N (to the) E
K (to the) O I N (to the) E
Bill Mounce gonna make you bounce
Yo, Daniel Wallace
I’m busting out like Daniel Wallace
Watch me parse them verbs cuz my Greek is flawless
What you think, you got mad skills?
Best check again cuz my Koine kills!
My Greek abilities left my brain
Now I praise the Lord cuz they back again! Amen!
K (to the) O I N (to the) E
Objective Genitive that’s the category!!
K (to the) O I N (to the) E
D.W. bringing the beat–Daniel Wallace

All things are better in Koine:
Like in the blue GNT with all the extra textual critical information
It’s what D.A. Carson says:
And if you can’t trust this guy, who can you trust?
It saves the exegetical day:
Especially in 1 Timothy 2:12
All things are better, yes they are better
ti legeis en koine
It used to drive me insane but now I use it everyday
All things are better, bound like a fetter
To my English language cynicism, my love for textual criticism
All things are better in Koine
If it’s aleph and B its good enough for me!

FlashWorks 4.2

FlashWorks version 4.2 was released today (August 20) for both Greek and Hebrew. It has been updated to run on the latest operating systems (Mac OSX Leopard and Windows Vista). There are no new features. In a few months there will be a poll taken as to what new features you would like to see.

Greek audio and mp3

Wow. You all really like the mp3 format and the ability to download the files. Response is overwhelming. But here I sit with a large stock of Greek classes on audio CD format.

So for the time being, when you purchase the Greek class on audio CD, you will also be able to download the mp3 files so you can get started right away.

Lectures by download

You are now able to download Mounce's and Pratico's (and soon Van Pelt's) Greek and Hebrew lectures. This means you can get help right now, for $5 off the normal price and without shipping costs. But the downloads are large (about 250 megs), so be sure you have a stable internet connection.

When you are done buying them, you are taken directly to your account where you can download them. If you have any problems, you can always come back to your account at a later time and download the files.
